The most popular hemorrhoids cream has been around since about 1926, although its forumulation changed around 1935 when the company that produced it acquired a sunburn oil and transformed it into a hemorrhoids treatment. As with any medication - prescription or over-the-counter, care should be taken when using any hemorrhoids treatment, and medications should not be used for other than their intended purpose.
How Does It Work?
The cream everyone thinks of first contains a substance called phenylephrine HCL that will shrink the swollen tissues of hemorrhoids, although constant irritation around the area of an external hemorrhoid can reduce the effect of the cream, or at least it seemed to for me.
This substance works by constricting blood vessels that feed blood and fluid to the area around the hemorrhoid. In fact, phenylephrine is the same ingredient used in some sinus medications, because constricting blood vessels in the nose helps reduce the mucous output of those membranes.
Because of this property, some people have begun using hemorrhoids cream for non-intended applications. For example, it has been used under and around the eyes to reduce swelling, although one bride tried this on her wedding day only to end up with an allergic rash on her face.
Male dance club patrons have also begun using large quantities of the cream on their upper bodies, with the intention of shrinking the blood vessels in the skin and giving them a more "ripped" look. Bodybuilders have used the cream for the same purpose during competitions. This is certainly outside the recommended use of this product, and the effect on blood pressure or other bodily functions is not fully known.
Be Careful
Because phenylephrine HCL is a strong substance, it should only be applied in small quantities to the area of the hemorrhoid. If no results are obtained in seven days, a doctor should be consulted.
Definitely, do not apply the cream to any other areas of the body besides the location of the piles. In fact, you might even consider using a natural alternative to the chemicals found in these creams. There are a number of effective natural remedies - both from traditional Chinese medicine and those passed down as home remedies through the years.
There are internal and external formulations from the field of alternative health that you should also consider. You might also want to compare ingredients between the natural formulas and the over-the-counter treatments. Then, you can decide for yourself which course of action feels right for you.
